The Little Chick in Red

Hi there! I am happy to report that the Traveling Chicken and her glamorous entourage arrived safely in Texas! From the looks of the box, she underwent a most thorough examination in Customs. However, her sterling reputation as an international ambassador of creative good will (and fun!) must have preceded her. They carefully wrapped her back up and sent her on her way!

After a leisurely morning of tea and scones, she graciously posed for me yesterday afternoon. She seems to favor a vintage tea towel, and I can't say that I blame her.  She looks stunning in red! Awhile ago, I purchased this tiny, 4-inch wooden panel, and I hadn't found just the right subject for it. When I unpacked the little Traveling Chicken, though, I knew she was it!

In the spirit of the holiday season, I'm going to start her auction on Daily Paintworks at $1.00.  All proceeds from the auction will be donated to fellow painter, Azra's, favorite charity.  She was the one that started this very fun tradition, so I think it is only fitting! Thank you, Azra!

  5. Hi Darla, your painting is Absolutely Beautiful!! The canvas really gives her the best showcase possible too.
I can't tell you how proud you've made me feel and such an honour to choose a charity!! I think because of recent events the charity that is running at the moment on DPW which is for the hurricane victims would be the best choice.
Thankyou so much my Dear Friend .xxx

  6. That's lovely Darla, you have a very nice way with soft edges and nice glowing reflections. The contrast is striking, as are the rich deep reds. What a nice picture and nice idea for charity.

  8. She's darling and perky! Great job Darla. And what a wonderful holiday idea, an auction for the charity of Azra's choice.
As one of the first painters, what all is still left in the traveling box of the Little Chicken? Is the cracked chicken still with the group for example? Are there any of the mexican chickens or the mama and the babies? I just think this whole project that Azra dreamed up is so much fun. Thank you Azra and thank you all the painters who've participated so far!!

  9. Hi Jill, thank you! I received three chickens in a nice wooden box. Ms. Chick, the tall leggy Mexican chicken and a small ceramic chicken with chicks. All arrived in excellent condition and have been very well behaved, lol. :)

Thanks to everyone for letting me participate, and thank you all for helping to make Ms. Chick's auction successful.

We had a little photo shoot this afternoon, and I have everyone packaged and ready to mail to Kathleen in California! :)

  10. Hey Darla! How's the cigar box holding up? Your work is so dramatic, and you're right she does look great in red! Have some relatives in San Antonio. My niece works at the San Antonio Museum of Art there. Have to get to TX one of these days! Glad you participated, good job!

  11. Hi Linda! The cigar box is holding up well. I think it is responsible for her safe travel! San Antonio is a lovely city...especially this time of year. They have the River Walk adorned with Christmas lights. So pretty! I hope you can visit soon!

Thanks again to everyone! I appreciate all of your kind words, and all of the help I received with this project. Nan and Karla are the best! Thank you all!

  13. Darla, I love your rendition of the chicken - I like how you are able to interpret different surfaces - ie, that chicken looks like ceramic - I think I know what it feels like!
